Study Grant - "Fondazione Sorelle Milanese"

The French citizens with tried Italian ancestries will be able to use the Scholarships distributed by the "Fondazione Sorelle Milanese" to participate free of charge to the course of Italian Language.

The "Fondazione Sorelle Milanese" Clementina and Paolina is instituted to promote and to maintain in the French citizens of Italian ancestry the tie with the origin culture alive. Every year it institutes scholarships to finance a stay/summery study of 3 weeks in the University Campus of Savona in collaboration with didactic staff of the Faculty of "Scienze della Formazione e di Lingue e Letterature Straniere" of Genoa University, and the Spes S.c.p.A Society agency manager and promoter of the Campus of Savona.

The "Fondazione Sorelle Milanese"

Mrs. Paolina Milanese, was born in Piedmont in 1904 and a resident of Savona for many years, towards the end of 1993 she visits the law offices of G.B. Nicolini in order to assess the possibility of realizing her dream.

Fondazione sorelle Milanese Mrs. Milanese received a visit from her distant cousins who had emigrated to France. These cousins were accompanied by their children who were born in France and thus were French citizens in all respects. The children however could not speak or understand the Italian language of their origins. This circumstance deeply affected Mrs Milanese. She turned to lawyer Nicolini to see if it was possible to realize an effort that would provide the possibility to French citizens of proven Italian origin, to travel to Italy, possibly in Savona, for the study of the Italian language. This unsettling circumstance deeply affected Mrs. Milanese. She then turned to Atorney Nicolini to entertain the possiblity of seting up a system that would provide the possiblity for French citizens, of verified Italian origin, to travel to Italy, possibly to Savona, and to learn the Italian language.

To fund the project, Mrs. Milanese offered most of her savings and those inherited from her late sister Clementina to form a foundation. In August of 1994, with the aid of the Savona notary public a solution was found with the establishment, of the Foundation Milanese Sisters Clementina and Paolina. Following the footsteps of Mrs. Milanese’s legacy, the foundation was established to bestow scholarships to French citizens of Italian origin to provide regularly scheduled courses of Italian language and culture in Italy

Thereafter contacts were established with the University of Genoa for the organization of the courses. An agreement was finalized in November 1994. The first courses were held in Genoa in the summer of 1995 at the International Centre of Italian Studies at the University of Genoa with the issuance of the first scholarships.

In 2002, the Foundation was is recognized by the Region of Liguria the Legal Personality of Private Law and consequently is recorded on the register at no. 386. It is then that the first board is formed, as required by the Statute of the Foundation, with a member indicated by Unige in the person of Professor Dino Cofrancesco, one indicated by the city of Savona in the person Councillor Francis Lirosi, one indicated by the Company of Francesisti of Savona in the person of Prof. Maria Angela Levo and one indicated by the Order of Lawyers of Savona in the person of lawyer Federico Ascheri.

During the first session, which was held on April 2, 2003, Prof. Levo was appointed as the first President of the Foundation and Atorney Ascheri as the Foundation Secretary. Since 2011, the President of the Foundation is Prof. Daria Anna Monti. In 2006, because of the opening of the University Campus in Savona and following the will of Mrs. Milanese to ensure that the courses be held in the city of Savona, a new agreement was signed and henceforth all courses are held at the Campus as per her wishes.
